Description:

COMP I Paper #2: Proposal Due: October 22nd, 2019, ONLINE BY 11:59 PM. Length: 4 full pages (anything less results in an automatic zero with no recourse) Directions: In this paper, you will propose a policy of change. You will utilize three (3) outside sources to further your argument. Synopsis: when you propose a policy, you’re arguing for a change. You’re saying that something should or shouldn’t exist or occur. For example: when Richard Nixon founded the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, he did so because he believed that our air and water should be clean. What I look for when reviewing your papers: Thesis (main point): Does your paper have a clear idea that’s guiding it? Can you sum up this idea in a sentence or two? Evidence: Have you provided enough convincing evidence for your point? Engagement: Does this paper engage the reader? Is it exciting enough to compel a reader to continue through to the end? Title & Introduction: Would the title entice someone to read it? Is the introduction attention- grabbing in a positive, non-hyperbolic way? Conclusion: Does your conclusion provide closure and stimulate thinking? Or does it simply repeat the main ideas of your paper? Proofreading: Is your paper largely free of errors? Format: Is your heading correct? Proper identification? Double-spaced? One-inch margins? Does it meet the minimum page length requirements? There are many different types of proposals. Here are few suggestions: A proposal for a change in law, such as: “The drinking age in the United States should be lowered to 18.” An art installation proposal, such as: “Why I believe the city of Toledo should fund my public art project.” A business proposal written to potential investors, such as: “Why investing in my new startup will produce revenue for your business.” A proposal for the revamping of a non-law policy, such as: “Why the MPAA needs publicly available standards for their rating system.” A scientific research proposal, such as: “Data suggests that teens who use electronic cigarettes are more likely to try a standard cigarette than those who abstain, but more research is needed. Here is what I plan to do, and what I need to do it.” One could write a proposal for essentially anything, but for the purposes of this assignment, try not to stray too far from these suggestions. You will, of course, come up with your own topic. On that note, here is a list of banned topics (nothing new can be said about them, and even if you could, you’d need WAY more than five pages to do so): Legalization of marijuana Anything about the Electoral College Gay marriage Abortion The death penalty Gun rights (really anything at all about guns) College textbooks Health insurance Immigration Vaping Ask yourself these questions while working on your proposal: “Would a reasonable person disagree with me?” If you’re answer is “no,” then your argument is not debatable. “Is my argument focused enough for the number of pages I have?” Steer clear of too grand an argument. Remember: you’re not going to solve world hunger in a college essay. “Are my sources valid and relevant?” Don’t look for sources that simply agree with you. Find the best and latest research to further your argument. You may find that the data disagrees with you. “Have I committed any logical fallacies?” Just because a lot of people agree with you, doesn’t mean you’re right. Examples of good topics: These are just examples. You DO NOT have to pick one of these topics. Mandatory military service in the U.S. The “Net Neutrality” debate Civil forfeiture laws The sexualization of young people in the media and its effects Overuse of social media and its effects Mob mentality on the internet Privacy VS security Grading Rubric for Paper #2: Proposal Am I proposing an actual policy for change? Look for these key elements in your paper: Are there definite beneficiaries to my policy? Have I used the words “propose,” “solution,” “policy,” “problem,” or any synonyms? Is my problem clearly defined? Have I identified what I believe to be the cause of the problem that I would like to fix? Have I named the person(s), institutions, laws, or behavior that I believe to be the cause? Do I have valid, up to date sources? Have I obtained my sources through the library’s database, or through other academically relevant means? Have I ensured that my sources contain the best possible information about my subject? Have I properly integrated all of my research? Have I introduced all of my quotations, and not simply placed them within a paragraph? Have I formatted my quotations properly according to MLA or APA standards? Have I cited all of my sources using in-text citations? Even if I summarized or paraphrased a source, have I still cited it with an in-text citation? Is my paper concise and coherent? Do I move smoothly from idea to idea, or do I jump around? Have I properly employed paragraph-level organization? Am I keeping my topics together? Am I being needlessly wordy? Am I using proper grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, and diction? Am I writing in complete sentences? Do all of my sentences have a subject and a verb? Am I properly subordinating information by using compound sentences instead of using multiple sentences that convey connected ideas? Do I understand the rules that govern the uses of commas, semicolons, and colons? Have I used them appropriately? Am I writing in an academic diction, or does my paper sound too conversational? Is my format correct? Am I using Times New Roman, 12 point font? Have I ensured that my paper adheres to either MLA or APA guidelines? Do I have a “Works Cited” or “References” page? Is it formatted correctly? Do I have the proper number of pages?
