Description:
Colonial discourse posits that Africa is ‘backward, unmodern, and primitive’. As such, it needed the intervention of colonialism in order to ‘modernize’ the continent. The motion picture Black Panther, and specifically the fictional country of Wakanda, provides a critique to these notions. In no more than two pages (1.5 spacing, 12 point New Roman font, and one inch margins) make visible to your reader the ways in which this critique is voiced. Pay particular attention to how ‘western civilization’ is depicted and juxtaposed with Wakandan society and ethics. In your final paragraph, provide insight into how this film deals with different forms of blackness, and what this potentially teaches us that differs from colonial discourse and the way that blackness is understood in the West.
