Description:
Prompt During the first 6 weeks of this course, we have examined the relationship between ethics and morals, questions regarding self-interest, and three major schools of ethics (Utilitarian, Deontological, and Virtue). Write an essay that: Explains the relationship between ethics and morals. How are they similar, different, and/or related? Do not rely on dictionary definitions here! Instead, reference distinctions and definitions we have discussed in class. Explains the fundamentals of each of the three schools of ethics. Your response should include a discussion (and citation) of at least one thinker from each school (Bentham or Mill for Utilitarianism, Kant or O’Neill for Deontological, and Aristotle for Virtue). Provides a critique of each of the three schools of ethics. You are encouraged but not required to cite additional readings here. Explains your evolving personal ethical framework vis-à-vis the different approaches we have encountered thus far. Do you primarily identify with one of the schools? Two? A mix? What moral principles or guidelines help you respond to questions about how you ought to live? To what extent, if any, do you think morals are self-interested? Why? Your response here should reference at least one of the readings on self-interest (Plato’s “Ring of Gyges,” Rachel’s “Critique of Ethical Egoism,” and/or Thomas Hobbes’ “On the State of Nature”). Must be in 12pt font 1inch margins
