All papers must be done using APA or MLA paper style. You may wish to include a cover page and or an abstract, but they are not required. You may simply begin your paper with the heading used for all course assignments as stated under Course Expectations and Policy Statements in your syllabus. You must include a reference list at the end of your paper that is not included in the page length requirement. Your second paper topic must be one that is different from the topic you selected for Paper One. The topic for this paper should still help you to better understand details of some social service issue for American Indians/ Alaska Natives (see topics below). This paper should be 5 pages in length and use APA or MLA format. Your paper must be individually written and will be assigned an individual grade. You must use at least 3 peer-reviewed articles, books, reputable websites, newspapers, and magazine articles. Peer reviewed articles that are recent in publication (2000 – 2020) are highly recommended. Do not rely on articles that are part of this course assigned readings and/or other class assigned materials. Failure to use outside materials (those not assigned in class) will result in a failing grade. Your paper should incorporate the following: 1) a brief introduction to the topic/issue as it pertains to American Indian/Alaska Natives or First Nations people; 2) facts and or data that demonstrates the phenomena (how many AI/AN/First Nations people are impacted by this issue); and 3)solutions to the problem/issue as they apply to American Indian, Alaska Native, Native American, First Nations or Indigenous individuals, communities, populations, etc. in North America. The emphasis in this paper should be on the solutions to the problem/issue. Look for articles that not only describe the issue/problem but what to do about it. Major topics you may use for the focus of your papers: Substance abuse; alcohol abuse; elder abuse; gangs in Indian Country; domestic violence; the Indian Child Welfare Act; child welfare (child abuse and neglect in Indian Country) physical, sexual, emotional or neglect issues; crime and violence among Native American/American Indian (NA/AI); health issues for NA/AI peoples including diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease; smoking and the traditional use of tobacco; sexually transmitted diseases; sexual orientation issues (GLBT issues); and issues for NA/AI elders;. The paper for this course must address these issues for NA/AI populations.
