This week,determine if a student is eligible or not to receive the EBD benefits and support. To complete this assignment, include the following: Part 1: Discuss the required eligibility and programming for students with EBD, including the key issues in determining eligibility. Be sure to include how differing backgrounds and cultural expectations can affect students’ eligibility. Part 2: Research the criteria for determining eligibility for your state and compare your state criteria to the information noted in the text. For example, Connecticut’s criteria can be found at: http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2663&q=334414. Briefly describe the major differences and similarities. Discuss how the differences in criteria might influence different eligibility outcomes. Part 3: Case Study: Create a fictitious student, or base this part on a familiar student, and then briefly include a description of a student’s cultural background. Apply your knowledge of characteristics and risk-factors for EBD to determine eligibility for EBD using the criteria for your state and from the course readings. As a leader in special education, discuss how you would address the comments of a teacher on the IEP team who insists a child’s culture has no effect on eligibility although based on your training and research you believe otherwise.
